Reviving Ottoman Heritage: A Journey of Innovation and Wellness
By Sitki Kazanci
Gökhan Yavuzer, founder and visionary behind Hürrem Hammam Wellness and Spa, has redefined wellness by seamlessly blending Turkish heritage with modern luxury in the heart of the United States. From an entrepreneurial dream to an authentic cultural experience, Hürrem Hammam has become a beacon of Ottoman tradition for a global audience. In this exclusive interview, Yavuzer shares his inspiring journey, the challenges of introducing a deeply rooted cultural concept abroad, and the future of Hürrem as a pioneer in the Spa and Wellness industry.
What inspired you to embark on this entrepreneurial journey? Were there key influences or moments in your early life that shaped your path?
From the very beginning, we adopted a business philosophy centered on architectural designs and engineering solutions that exceed industry expectations. Through years of creating numerous Spa and Wellness projects worldwide, we gained a deep understanding of what people seek in an exceptional wellness experience. Hürrem was born as the culmination of this knowledge and vision.
Since childhood, I have been deeply fascinated by architectural projects. The process of solving problems, delving into details, planning meticulously, and eventually witnessing the pride of a completed masterpiece became almost a hobby for me. I firmly believe that creating something remarkable requires effort and pushing boundaries, and I find immense joy in every stage of this journey.
What motivated you to bring the Turkish hammam experience to the United States? Was this part of a long-term vision or a concept that evolved over time?
Throughout my career with the Juno brand, I had the opportunity to design and implement numerous Spa and Wellness projects across the globe. In some of these, I explored incorporating the Ottoman hammam tradition to add a meaningful narrative to the project. However, I never had the chance to realize this vision at the scale I desired.
Hürrem represents the fulfillment of a lifelong aspiration to create a business wholly dedicated to this dream. From design to implementation and operations, Hürrem is a testament to the collaborative effort of many talented individuals who believed in this project. Building in the US—a country where construction can be more challenging than in Europe—required overcoming significant obstacles, but we stayed remarkably true to our initial plans.
While the constraints of the construction site required certain compromises, I can confidently say that future Hürrem projects will set even higher benchmarks.

It took three years to bring Hürrem Hammam to life. Can you walk us through the process? What were the biggest challenges and achievements?
Leading a team with extensive project management experience from various parts of the world made my work significantly easier. Key components of the project were produced in Türkiye, assembled, and rigorously tested before installation. Ensuring compliance with US standards was a challenging phase, but our commitment to high standards helped us navigate this smoothly.
From the outset, our architectural and branding teams worked closely to align the space’s atmosphere with the brand’s story. We approached this with passion, reflecting the legendary love story of Suleiman the Magnificent and Hurrem Sultan in every detail—from our logo to the ambiance. This process, while demanding, was one of the most enjoyable parts of the journey.
The traditional Turkish hammam is deeply tied to culture and history. How do you preserve its authenticity while adapting to the preferences of your US clientele?
This question has been a key focus for our design team from the start. Turkish hammams are a rich mosaic, shaped by the cultures preceding the Ottoman Empire. At Hürrem, we combined traditional Turkish hammam rituals with modern, high-tech spa elements to cater to guests familiar with world-class wellness experiences.
We made it a priority to educate and encourage guests to embrace traditional rituals such as kese (exfoliation) and foam treatments. Before the official launch, we conducted a soft opening in Miami to gather valuable feedback and fine-tune our offerings. This iterative approach enabled us to balance authenticity with local preferences seamlessly.
What sets Hürrem Hammam apart from other wellness and spa facilities?
In simple terms: unparalleled standards, skillfully integrated engineering, and a commitment to taking the road less traveled. While we have executed countless world-class Spa and Wellness projects, what was often missing was a unifying story that gave the space its soul.
At Hürrem, the love story of Hurrem Sultan and Sultan Suleiman plays a central role, influencing everything from interior design to branding. Our space is not just a wellness facility but a cultural and artistic experience, with authentic artifacts and a jewelry collection inspired by Ottoman history. This storytelling approach sets Hürrem apart, creating a unique and immersive atmosphere.
What lessons have you learned as an entrepreneur introducing a cultural concept in a foreign country?
The biggest challenge was translating a cultural legacy into a tangible experience without appearing overly ornate or artificial. We leveraged the recognition of Hürrem Sultan as a historical figure in the Miami area to create an inviting yet educational spa experience. Combining our extensive Spa and Wellness expertise with this cultural narrative allowed us to deliver something truly special.

How does your Turkish heritage influence the philosophy and operations of Hürrem Hammam?
Our heritage is at the heart of everything we do. From rituals and textiles to the very essence of cleanliness and self-care, we aim to honor and elevate Turkish traditions on a global stage. The inspiration behind Hürrem has always been to create a synthesis of modern luxury and our rich cultural legacy.
What feedback have you received since the opening, particularly from the Turkish-American community and the wider audience?
We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from guests. Turkish visitors appreciate the familiar atmosphere and cuisine, while international guests are captivated by the unique experience. Their enthusiasm and curiosity make the entire venture incredibly rewarding.

Any final advice for readers looking to blend cultural heritage with entrepreneurship?
I encourage aspiring entrepreneurs to explore their culture and history for inspiration. The wealth of opportunities to innovate while staying rooted in tradition is vast. For me, the story of Hürrem Sultan and Sultan Suleiman served as a guiding light, proving that when you combine passion with a clear vision, everything falls into place. ■
