In this exclusive interview, TurkNetwork Magazine speaks with Cem Tahir, founder of Cem Tahir P.A. and co-founder of the US Immigration Center. With legal credentials from both Türkiye and the United States, and a Master of Laws from Georgetown University, Mr. Tahir has built a distinguished career at the intersection of international and US immigration law. Known for his firm’s commitment to excellence, integrity, and client-first service, he shares the story of his legal journey, the core values that guide his practice, and how he is responding to the evolving challenges in immigration law under the current political climate. With plans to expand into corporate and family law, and a keen focus on accessibility and innovation, Cem Tahir is not only shaping the future of his firm, he is also empowering countless clients in their pursuit of the American dream.

To begin, can you tell us about your background and what led you to establish your law practice in the field of US immigration law?
After earning my law degree in Istanbul and becoming a licensed attorney in Türkiye, I began my legal career working on a variety of civil and international legal matters. Motivated by a desire to expand my legal expertise across jurisdictions, I pursued a Master of Laws degree at Georgetown University, where I specialized in areas closely related to international and immigration law. Following graduation, I passed the New York Bar Exam and became a licensed attorney in the State of New York.
As a dual-licensed attorney admitted to practice in both Türkiye and the United States, I chose to focus on immigration law—a field that inherently bridges domestic and international legal systems. My background allows me to provide comprehensive legal support to individuals and organizations navigating complex immigration processes, often involving cross-border elements. I combine my knowledge of international legal frameworks with deep familiarity with US immigration policies to advocate effectively for my clients.

Your firm, Cem Tahir P.A., has become a trusted name in immigration services. What are the core values and mission that guide your firm’s approach to serving clients?
Our firm’s success and reputation are built on five core values: excellence, teamwork, client focus, open communication, and integrity. Each of these values is equally important and deeply embedded in the way we serve our clients. Excellence drives us to deliver the highest quality service with attention to detail and a commitment to continuous improvement. Teamwork ensures that our diverse team collaborates effectively to provide well-rounded, strategic support. Client focus keeps us aligned with the individual needs and goals of each person we serve, recognizing that every immigration journey is unique. Open communication fosters trust, clarity, and transparency throughout the process, helping clients feel informed and supported at every step. And above all, integrity anchors our work in honesty, accountability, and ethical practice. Together, these values shape our mission: to guide individuals and families through the immigration process with professionalism, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to their success.

In addition to your legal practice, you founded the US Immigration Center (USIMM Center). What inspired the creation of this platform, and how does it complement the services offered by your firm?
The US Immigration Center was born out of a clear need we observed through our legal practice. As demand from our clients continued to grow, Baris Taylan and I saw an opportunity to create a dedicated platform that could offer focused, accessible, and client-centered support specifically in the area of immigration law. Our inspiration came from the challenges many individuals and families face when trying to navigate the US immigration system—a process that can be both complex and overwhelming. By founding the US Immigration Center, we aimed to provide not only expert legal services, but also a trusted resource that educates, empowers, and guides clients through each step of their immigration journey. This platform complements our firm’s work by allowing us to extend our reach, offer more streamlined support, and continue delivering personalized, high-quality service rooted in our core values of excellence, integrity, and client focus.
Immigration law is complex and continually evolving. How do you and your team stay current with legal updates and ensure clients receive accurate, timely, and effective representation?
Immigration law is indeed a complex and ever-changing field, which is why staying current with legal updates is a top priority for our team. We dedicate ourselves to monitoring new policies, regulatory changes, and court decisions on a daily basis, using a variety of trusted legal resources and professional networks. This continuous vigilance allows us to anticipate how changes might impact our clients’ cases and adapt our strategies accordingly. Moreover, we make it a point to communicate these developments proactively, ensuring our clients are always informed and prepared. By combining up-to-date knowledge with personalized attention, we strive to provide accurate, timely, and effective representation that addresses each client’s unique situation with confidence and care.
You have worked with individuals and businesses from diverse backgrounds. What have been some of the most rewarding or memorable cases in your career so far?
Throughout our career, we have had the privilege of working with clients from many different parts of the world, with a particularly strong connection to individuals from Türkiye. What makes our work truly rewarding is not just the complexity or size of the cases, but the positive impact we are able to make on our clients’ lives. Every successful case—whether it is helping a single individual achieve their immigration goals or assisting a large business navigates complex regulations—is meaningful and memorable to us. These successes represent milestones of hope, new beginnings, and sometimes even life-changing opportunities for our clients. It is this personal connection and the ability to make a real difference that continues to motivate and inspire our team every day.

What advice would you offer to individuals or families navigating the US immigration process for the first time?
For individuals or families navigating the US immigration process for the first time, my strongest advice is to seek guidance from an experienced immigration lawyer well before beginning the process—ideally at least one year in advance. It is crucial to work with someone who is not only knowledgeable and experienced but also responsive and fully committed to your case. Early consultation allows you to better understand the complexities of immigration law, prepare the necessary documents thoroughly, and develop a strategic plan tailored to your unique circumstances. This proactive approach can significantly reduce stress, avoid costly mistakes, and increase the chances of a successful outcome in what can often be a complex and lengthy process.

As someone who serves both international and domestic clients, what trends are you currently observing in US immigration law, and how do you foresee the landscape evolving in the coming years?
Currently, one of the most notable trends in US immigration law is the significant influence of political leadership on policy direction, particularly under the administration of President Donald Trump. His 2025 proposals for immigration reform reflect a continuation of his strong stance on immigration, including calls for mass deportations, increased restrictions on asylum access, and comprehensive border reform. During his first term, the Trump administration enacted a series of policy changes that reshaped the immigration landscape, and upon returning to office in January 2025, he quickly introduced several new executive orders aimed at further tightening immigration enforcement.
From my experience serving both international and domestic clients, it is clear that these shifts are creating a more challenging and complex environment for immigrants and businesses alike. We are seeing stricter scrutiny on visa applications, greater enforcement actions, and evolving legal interpretations that require constant monitoring and adaptation.
Looking ahead, I foresee that US immigration law will continue to be shaped heavily by political priorities, and there will likely be ongoing efforts to tighten enforcement and reduce immigration pathways, especially for certain categories of immigrants. However, this environment also presents opportunities for those who seek expert guidance to navigate these changes effectively. Staying informed and proactive will be critical for anyone involved in immigration matters, and legal advisors will play an essential role in helping clients adapt to an evolving and often uncertain landscape.

Looking ahead, what are your goals for the future of Cem Tahir P.A. and the US Immigration Center? Are there any new initiatives or areas of focus on the horizon?
Looking ahead, our primary goal for Cem Tahir P.A. and the US Immigration Center is to grow and evolve in ways that better serve our clients’ expanding needs. Due to the high demand we have seen from both current and potential clients, we are planning to broaden our practice areas beyond immigration law. Specifically, we aim to introduce services in corporate law, family law, and contract law. This strategic expansion will allow us to provide more holistic legal support to our clients, many of whom face interconnected legal challenges beyond immigration.
By integrating these new areas of focus, we hope to become a one-stop resource for our clients, offering comprehensive guidance throughout their personal and professional journeys in the United States. Alongside this, we remain committed to maintaining the core values of excellence, client focus, integrity, and open communication that have defined our approach since the beginning.
In addition to expanding our practice, we are also exploring new initiatives to enhance accessibility and responsiveness, such as leveraging technology to streamline client interactions and improve case management. Ultimately, our vision is to build a versatile, client-centered firm that adapts to the changing legal landscape and continues to provide trusted, effective representation for years to come. ■
