From a small village in Kayseri to building a distinguished name in the US stone industry, Şaban Taşdemir has paved the way for Turkish artisanship to thrive internationally. As the founder of Taşdemir Marble and Granite, he has dedicated his career to craftsmanship, quality, and the preservation of Turkish heritage in masonry. His company has played an instrumental role in landmark projects, from luxury hotels to mosques and embassies. In this exclusive interview, Taşdemir shares his entrepreneurial journey, the challenges he overcame, and his vision for the future of his company.

Can you share a bit about your background and early life?
I was born in the Başakpınar district of Kayseri, Türkiye, as the fourth of five siblings. Growing up in a modest but hardworking family, I learned the value of discipline and perseverance early on. My father remains a guiding presence in my life, while my mother, who was an integral part of our family, passed away in 2006.
My introduction to the stone industry began at an early age. After completing middle school, I started working with marble, gradually developing a deep understanding of the trade. Today, I am proud to pass down this legacy to my two sons, Muhterem and Resul, who are now 22 and 24 years old.

What led you to the United States, and when did your journey begin?
In 1995, I was running my own company in Türkiye, exporting marble and stone to Europe. While business was going well, I realized that the Turkish market had its limitations, and I aspired to expand my reach. As part of my research, I explored business opportunities in both Europe and the United States.
However, my decision to move was solidified in 2006, shortly after my mother’s passing. This was a challenging time, both emotionally and financially, but I was determined to establish myself in a new market. Despite the difficulties, I took the leap and moved to the US with the vision of bringing Turkish craftsmanship to a global stage.

How did you establish Taşdemir Marble and Granite?
Having already accumulated years of experience in trade and export, I set clear objectives for my journey in the United States. I knew that my expertise in natural stone and marble could provide value in the American market.
As my projects grew and my reputation strengthened, it became evident that I needed to formalize my business. This led to the founding of Taşdemir Marble and Granite, a company that proudly carries my family name. The company quickly gained recognition for its superior craftsmanship and commitment to quality, enabling us to work on prestigious projects nationwide.
Tell us about Taşdemir Marble and Granite and your team.
My hometown, Başakpınar, is near the birthplace of Mimar Sinan, one of the greatest architects in history. Growing up in this region, we were surrounded by a strong tradition of masonry, artistry, and craftsmanship. This heritage shaped my perspective and inspired me to bring our skills to the global stage.
At Taşdemir Marble and Granite, we take immense pride in our team of skilled artisans. Many of them, including my relatives and colleagues from Türkiye, have honed their craft through generations. Our expertise extends beyond simple stonework—we are true artists in the field, ensuring that every project is executed with precision and excellence.
Our portfolio includes luxury hotels, religious centers, embassies, and high-profile commercial and residential properties across the United States. Each project reflects our dedication to quality and our ability to transform spaces using the finest materials.

You have helped many Turkish workers establish themselves in the US. Can you elaborate on this?
One of my greatest achievements is the opportunity to help fellow Turkish craftsmen find their footing in the United States. Over the years, I have facilitated the arrival of at least 450 skilled workers, many of whom have contributed to our most significant projects.
This initiative is deeply personal to me. Beyond business, it is about preserving and showcasing Turkish artistry on an international scale. Our hands have shaped projects ranging from seven-star hotels to historic mosques, ensuring that our legacy of craftsmanship continues to thrive in a competitive industry.
Additionally, we actively import materials from Türkiye, further strengthening the bridge between our homeland and the US construction sector. Contributing to my country’s economy and supporting my community is a core value that continues to drive me.

What do you attribute your business success to?
My success can be attributed to discipline, ambition, and strategic planning. I am a goal-driven person, and once I set an objective, I work tirelessly to achieve it. Time is never a limitation—I dedicate myself fully to my work, ensuring that I uphold the highest standards in every project.
Additionally, being from Kayseri, a city known for its entrepreneurial spirit, has played a crucial role in shaping my business mindset. Kayseri natives are known for their business acumen, and I take great pride in carrying that reputation forward.
Ultimately, passion for my craft has been the key to my success. I truly love what I do, and that passion is reflected in every project we undertake.

Do you have any special memories as a Beşiktaş supporter?
Football has always been a major part of my life. My father, who is the imam of Başakpınar, is a devoted Beşiktaş supporter. In fact, he has managed to turn our entire village into Beşiktaş fans! Our loyalty to the team runs deep, and supporting them is something we take great pride in.

What challenges have you faced, and how did you overcome them?
Relocating to a new country comes with many challenges, and for me, adapting to American culture and overcoming language barriers were among the most difficult.
The construction industry in the US operates differently than in Türkiye, requiring me to adjust my approach. However, with perseverance, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn, I gradually overcame these obstacles. Today, I am proud to have built a successful business despite the initial hardships.

What are your future goals for Taşdemir Marble and Granite?
In the next five years, I plan to expand our presence by opening showrooms and warehouses in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles. These locations will allow us to better serve our clients and showcase our expertise on a larger scale.
We will also continue to seek out high-profile projects, ensuring that Taşdemir Marble and Granite remains at the forefront of the industry. Growth, innovation, and maintaining our reputation for excellence remain top priorities.

What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs moving to a new country?
For anyone looking to start fresh in a new country, my advice is simple: take things step by step and stay true to what you know best. It is crucial to be cautious and make well-calculated decisions.
Additionally, hard work, patience, and resilience are essential. Success does not happen overnight, but with dedication and a clear vision, you can achieve your goals. Most importantly, never compromise on quality—your work should always speak for itself. ■
